  • Assist communities with ideas for the workshops they want to run

  • Assist communities to plan for te reo Maori learning initiatives

  • Assist communities to apply for Ma te reo funding

  • Assist communities to report to funders

  • Facilitate meetings that advocate, promote and support te reo Maori

  • Support Maori language planning

I timata mai ngā kohinga korero mo tēnei māhere reo i te tau 2003.  Ko te māhere nei, he timatanga noa iho, ko te tūmanaako ma tēna, ko tēna o ngā marae, ngā hāpori raini e whakarite tā rātou ake māhere mo ngā mahi hei whakaora i te reo Māori.  Ka taea te whai ake ngā korero e pā ana ki ngā korero i puta mai i tēna, i tēna o ngā marae, hāpori raini mehemea ka whai ake i ēnei o ngā hōnonga.

Collating input for this language plan started in 2003.  This plan is but a beginning, with the hope that each marae and community will initiate their own language plans, in which to contribute to revitalizing te reo Māori.   You can find further discussion that came about from the participation of marae and communities if you click here.

Where will the bellbird find nourishment
You ask me what is the most important thing
I will tell you
It is Man!
It is Man!"

In my role as Adult Community Educator – I have had many opportunities to work with the Elderly and/or  Maori participants . I am thoughly enjoying these challenges and look forward to delivering programmes that suit this sector in our community.

Some of the workshops that Far North REAP are offering include:

  • Raranga Workshops run by Pare Nathan and Joy Wikitera. The success of these workshops is evident by the exhibitions these groups have presented within the Far North. What is even more special is the fact that these workshops take place on our Marae and participants are able to experience working in a Marae setting.

  • Te Reo classes: Arapera Witehira is the tutor for these classes. Arapera uses components of Te Ataarangi method of learning te reo in a very relaxed manner. 10 week classes are offered for Beginners, Intermediate and Senior levels.
  • Illustrators Workshops: Our very own talented artist Theresa Reihana tutors these workshops. Many of the participants have discovered special creative talents that have been supported with Theresa’s expertise.
  • Rongoa:  Tutored by Tia Jellick- this workshop allows participants the chance to visit the Ngahere and identify the leaves needed to make balms for a number of ailments. From this visit, participants see the process in Balm Making and leave with their own container of balm.
  • Tai Chi: These classes will be tutored by Marion Malone as numbers indicate. The one hour sessions (usually held over 10 sessions) can be held at either Far North REAP or on a Marae.
  • Mosaic Workshop: Colleen Waite tutors this workshop, Participants learn skills in mosaic making and are able to produce a number of items using the ideas learnt during this workshop.

Tutors are also contacting me with regard to holding workshops in ZEN workshops and SEWING classes.

If you have other ideas for workshops that we can provide for the Elderly within the community, please feel free to contact me at mercias@farnorthreap.org.nz                  or 408-1380. Remember workshops can take place on the Marae as well as other venues.
