I am the Road Safety
Coordinator for the Far North District.
I manage and coordinate
road safety projects to help educate, promote, and raise
awareness about the importance of road safety within local
communities.
Some of these projects
include the following:
Alcohol: Kta
Alcohol Accord, Slow Da Flow, SADD (Students Against Driving
Drunk), ALAC (Alcohol Advisory Council) resources
distribution into the community, Host Responsibility
training to Sports clubs and local community, working
collaboratively with NZ Police (Enforcement), ACC
(Education), FNDC (Engineering), and community to help
reduce alcohol related harm offending and drink driving.
Speed:
Working with ACC, to have speed trailer allocation across
the district to raise awareness to motorists about the
impact of speed. Working with local schools to help resolve
speed issues around their schools.
Child Restraints:
12 child restraint checkpoints are held throughout the
Kaitaia area each year to promote and raise awareness about
the correct usage of child restraints. A full range of child
restraint and accessories are available at Far North REAP
for community to purchase.
Fatigue:
Fatigue stops are held in Waiomio prior to long weekends, to
raise awareness to motorists of the importance of taking
breaks whilst traveling. At these stops there are toilets
available, fatigue and road safety resources, free espresso
coffee and sausage sizzles.
Cycling and
Pedestrian: Raising awareness about cycle and pedestrian
safety.
Terry Tepania and
Angelene Waitohi also run driver
license programmes, ie: Learners, Restricted, Safe with Age,
Defensive Driving, and Driver education.
I also work and support
five other community groups across the district who promote road
safety in their rohe, they are Te Runanga O Whaingaroa, Te
Hauora O Hokianga, Moerewa Driver Licensing, Te Hauora O Kaikohe,
and Te Hauora O Whanui.
