Matariki Toi Māori Wānanga

Celebrate Matariki while learning new creative and cultural skills in this hands-on workshop led by Tutor Kylie Simeon

This wānanga introduces learners to Māori traditions through weaving, storytelling, and art-making. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of Matariki (Māori New Year) while creating your own meaningful pieces.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this workshop, you will:

  • Understand the cultural significance of Matariki, including key stars and their meanings

  • Learn basic weaving techniques and create a kono (woven basket)

  • Design and create Matariki-inspired artwork

  • Explore Māori pūrākau (stories), values, and cultural practices

  • Express ideas of remembrance, celebration, and new beginnings through art
