Begin your journey into the rich tradition of Māori weaving. This introductory rāranga wānanga offers a hands-on experience with the art of weaving using harakeke (flax), while exploring the cultural values, practices, and knowledge that underpin this treasured Māori art form.
Participants will learn about the significance of harakeke within te ao Māori, including the tikanga associated with harvesting, preparation, and respectful use. Through guided instruction, you will develop foundational weaving skills and gain insight into both traditional techniques and contemporary weaving practices.
Suitable for beginners, this welcoming and engaging programme provides an opportunity to connect with Māori culture, learn practical skills, and create beautiful woven taonga inspired by generations of knowledge and creativity.

What You'll Learn
Participants will:
Gain an understanding of tikanga and cultural protocols associated with the respectful harvesting, preparation, and use of harakeke (flax).
Develop practical weaving skills while working with natural materials and learning a range of traditional and contemporary rāranga techniques, from beginner through to more advanced methods.
Build confidence in creating woven taonga, progressing from simple projects to more intricate pieces using recognised Māori weaving practices.
Create and complete a variety of woven items, including kono, putiputi and pākē with opportunities to develop the skills required for more advanced creations such as korowai.
