Te Kākano: An introduction to Te Reo Māori

This introductory 8-week course is designed to support ākonga in developing confidence and competence in the use of basic everyday Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga. Through a supportive and interactive learning environment, participants will be introduced to foundational language skills, including pronunciation, basic vocabulary, greetings, waiata, karakia, and culturally significant concepts.

The course aims to empower ākonga to use Te Reo Māori in their daily lives, strengthen their understanding of Māori identity and values, and encourage continued learning beyond the programme. By the end of the course, participants will have the confi dence to introduce themselves through their pepehā, engage in simple conversations, and incorporate Te Reo Māori into their homes, workplaces, and communities.

Learners will:

  • Confidently introduce themselves through the delivery of their pepehā and demonstrate an understanding of their whakapapa connections.

  • Apply correct pronunciation of the Māori alphabet (Te Pū Taka Māori) and a range of commonly used kupu Māori.

  • Recite a selection of karakia and waiata Māori with growing confi dence and understanding.

  • Use basic Te Reo Māori greetings and farewells appropriately in everyday contexts. Ask and answer questions in Te Reo Māori.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of numbers, days of the week, and months of the year in Te Reo Māori.

  • Build confidence in incorporating basic Te Reo Māori me ōnā tikanga practices into daily life and community interactions.
