Rāranga Harakeke Wānanga - Kaitaia

An introduction to the traditional practice of rāranga (Māori weaving), this wānanga provides an opportunity to learn about the cultural significance of harakeke and the tikanga in harvesting and use. Participants will explore foundational weaving techniques while gaining an appreciation for both traditional and contemporary approaches to working with flax. Suitable for beginners, this programme offers a welcoming pathway into the world of rāranga.
Learners will:
• learn tikanga (protocol) around harvesting
• work with Harakeke (flax) and learn basic to advanced contemporary and traditional techniques of weaving
• be able to make and complete a variety of items from kona (basket) or kete (basket) to korowai.
